Thanks for your input David! I agree completely; staying up to date is mission critical in this industry. I thinks it's an excellent point that the "expert SEO" should be something of a cutting-edge info resource themselves. I also agree that there are fewer SEO experts out-there than one might think, however I think that the list presented above is not quite ready to be used as a standard against which one could evaluate themselves for expertise. It also only reflects my personal take on the matter, however I'm going to include your own suggestions and we'll keep refining our criteria and see if we can develop something useful.

Any expert needs to stay abreast of the latest information and should also provide certain up to date information themselves. Based on your list I think there are far fewer SEO experts than one would think. I certainly don't fit, ouch!

That's an extremely important aspect of being an effective SEO. In fact staying abreast of the latest information may be the most challenging aspect of SEO today.

In addition to the qualifications you mentioned, I also think it is important that an SEO constantly be involved in the learning process. Especially involving keeping up with the latest methods and strategies. There are existing SEO's with great technical knowledge, but their methods are circa 1999 because they make no effort to progressively educate themselves.
