Seeding Infographics with Tumblr

This guest post was written by Ryan O’Connor. Today I’d like to talk about a strategy and platform that I don’t see getting much attention in the SEO world, Tumblr. I’m going to talk specifically about how I promote infographics on Tumblr, but the same principles can be used for articles, contests and other promotional strategies. When I “seed” an infographic my goal is to push it out to multiple channels (social media, blogs, news sites, forums, etc.) in a timely manner that increases the chance of it naturally spreading on its own and gaining additional exposure. For this strategy, no platform has been more effective for me than Tumblr. First, let’s get out of the way the fact that links from Tumblr subdomain blogs aren’t going to have the same SEO impact as links from sites hosted on their own domain. What Tumblr can do though, so long as you get in front of the right audience, is increase the overall reach of your infographic.Continue Reading

The ABC’s of Rapidly Growing Your Online Presence

This guest post was written by Nicholas Cardot from sitesketch101.com. ABC's of Growing Your Online Presence Imagine with me for a moment that an individual decides to create a blog on the topic of becoming a complete and utter failure at whatever you attempt in life. After a few months, or perhaps a year, this blog becomes wildly popular. This failure blog has tens of thousands of readers, hundreds of thousands in revenue, and more social media fans and followers than can be counted. Was this blog a raging success or a monumental failure for not accomplishing the very thing it set out to teach? Although some in the world of art can get away with flinging paint at their canvas in random splotches, working toward success in the world of online business requires a bit more planning and work. Enter the three pillars, or the ABC’s, of online business: amazing content, brilliant design, and commanding influence. These principles provide a sweeping framework that will guide you as you plan and execute your online activities. Continue Reading

Preparing for Life After Google Reader’s Demise

woman in mourningOur trusty old pal Google Reader’s July 1st demise is ever upon us. While many are in mourning, to be honest, I was never really a huge Google Reader fan to begin with. Did I just lose points on my geek card?  In fact, I preferred to receive many of my RSS feeds by email (gasp!). That is, until the tech world was shaken by the news of Google Reader’s impending death, and I started looking at other options. Enter stage right, Feedly. Did you hear the angels singing? I’m in love. I love Feedly on my PC. I love Feedly on my Mac. I love Feedly on my phone. I love Feedly on my iPad. I love Feedly while taking long walks along the beach…well, maybe that was taking it a little too far. Why do I love Feedly so much? The visual interface. For some reason it’s not as daunting and sterile as the long list of blog post titles staring me in the face in my Google Reader. I like the pretty pictures and it looks pretty across all of my devices.  I find that I actually check my RSS feed more often now. Continue Reading

Yeah, But… Social Media Can’t Be Tracked

Yeah, But... It's time to bring your business up to speed Even as social media matures there are still many misconceptions surrounding it. Take my job for example as a social media marketing strategist. Do you have any idea the kind of reaction I get when I give people my title? Here are a few: “So you just play on Facebook all day, that’s awesome!” “What a cool job, that must be so easy!” “Why do businesses need marketing plans for social media?” Or, from people of my parent’s generation (no offense Mom and Dad), a blank stare because they’re not quite sure what that all means. When I encounter “yeah, butters” who say social media can’t be tracked, and I ask them what their social media goals are, I get the same response as the last one above. I recently spoke to a group at a local chamber of commerce, and at the beginning of the presentation I asked people to raise their hand if they used social media for their business. About 90% of them did. Then I asked how many had a plan for their social media marketing. You guessed it, that number dropped significantly–only one person out of 30 raised their hand.
