Copywriting Tip- Stop Talking to Yourself

Hey, you're new. We like you already! You obviously have great taste! If you like what you read here you'll probably want to subscribe to our RSS feed (or the audio RSS feed). Stick around and be sure to speak up and post a comment or two!

The biggest mistake writers make is to write without knowing their audience. This is, without a doubt the #1 killer of conversions. You don’t just start writing and decide afterwards who you’re going to send a letter to, so why do so many people just jump in and start writing website copy without having a clue who they are writing to? How can you possibly communicate with site visitors if you have no idea who they are, what they are looking for, what problem they face, and how they hope to solve this problem?

You Can’t!

Find out everything you can about your target audience. Then combine all that info to create an imaginary person fitting the profile of your target audience. With every sentence, write to that person.

Here’s what they want to know:

• What’s in it for me?
• Why should I care?

They want to feel like they are your number one priority. They want to feel like you know them, you remember what they like and what they need. Give them the feeling you care, maybe you could actually care, you should. Too often we write in formal mode and lose the reader. So find out who they are and start writing to them not just to talk yourself up. Don’t talk about how great your services and products are, but about the customers’ needs and how you can help them. Use the word “you”, not “we”. We’re all self-absorbed, I know I’m impressed when I return to a coffee shop and they remember what drink I order. You want your site visitors to feel that.
