I work in website marketing … it is our job here at Pole Position Marketing to market our client websites. Having become something of a workaholic, putting in 6+ days a week of work, I can never completely put the work behind me. This truth has been evident for over a year, but the event I’m about to tell you brings a new level of realization.
My husband and I had driven to Santa Cruz for the weekend. I took the weekend off. My husband made all the arrangements and I was along for the ride. We stayed at a Bed and Breakfast. You’d have been proud of me (my husband was). I didn’t do any research as to where we would stay, and knew nothing more than the name of the establishment. I did very good at leaving my work behind, I didn’t look up their web site. I didn’t research the accommodations or history of the location or anything. I went in totally blind.
Having never indulged myself at a BnB, I had a small idea what to expect, but wasn’t entirely sure. We stayed at Cliff Crest Bed and Breakfast Inn, in “Jenny’s Room.” Here’s a picture I snagged off the website, and a photo of our room (images snagged and edited after I got home):
At breakfast we were joined by another guest who happens to own a BnB of her own. When I learned this small fact, the words that spilled out of my mouth still amaze me. I asked her if she frequently stayed at other BnB’s, adding that I thought it was great market research if she did. Great market research, good lord those words don’t sound like me. I kind of did a double take on myself. Had I been near a mirror I might have checked, was that really me who just asked that question?
Anyway, that’s the shocker event that took place in my life two weeks ago. I came to another level of realization that I am addicted to my work. I talked marketing with a complete stranger. While on a weekend get-away. But I found that bed and breakfasts are fun and I didn’t talk only marketing. We learned that eating fruit first thing in the morning before anything else, aids digestion. Our hostess Adriana also educated us how she removed the cholesterol from our eggs …
Recall how I said I hadn’t done any research on the location before we went. That was true, but in hind site, I realize I probably should have. Had I done so, I would have realized their website is designed using frames. I would have been able to discuss SEO with Adriana and Constantin, and explain why frames are bad — and how to use keywords more efficiently — and how inbound links are good (like mine) — and left my business card behind — and — and — Oh. But wait. I was on a weekend vacation.
