MSN and Search Marketshare

Hey, you're new. We like you already! You obviously have great taste! If you like what you read here you'll probably want to subscribe to our RSS feed (or the audio RSS feed). Stick around and be sure to speak up and post a comment or two!

With MSN’s Beta Search now rolled out, there are new rounds of speculation about how much of the overall search market share MSN will take from Google. MSN plans a full rollout their new search sometime this year or early next year. With that, it is assumed, that MSN will also launch an aggressive media campaign (we all know Microsoft has the money and does PR better than anybody) along with it.

Google obviously considers MSN and Yahoo to be a potential threat, and are wise to do so. MSN clearly wants to take a big chunk of the search market away from Google, and accomplishing that is very possible. I do not, however, think that Google is in any immediate danger of being knocked off the top of the mountain. If anything I foresee a very long and hard-fought battle for dominance, a battle which we may see a different “king of the hill” from month to month.

I welcome such hard-fought battles and certainly hope that Yahoo stops settling for picking up the scraps and jumps into the battle. A three-way battle for dominance will mean that no single engine will hold a virtual monopoly on search results and it may also bring about some drastic and much needed changes in search performance.

Not that the search engines are not doing a good job now, but there is nothing like a little competition to make them do better!
