One Result to Rule them All

Yahoo rolled out a new beta feature called”Instant Search“. You have to like their little dig at Google, “Why feel lucky when you can be right?”

I can’t say that I have ever used the “I’m Feeling Lucky” button on Google and I read recently that I’m in the clear majority of Google users there. The idea of Yahoo’s Instant Search is a much better one than Google’s I’m feeling lucky button, but it’s still limiting. I search to see what my options are. If I’m buying something I usually find three or four sites selling the same item so I can compare. Never do I buy from the first site I find. Same is true with research, I don’t just look at one site, but instead I look at many to gather as much information as possible.

It seems lately that the search engines are trying so hard (too hard, I tend to think) to keep themselves fresh in the blogospere they continue to develop less than sensical products. Not that it’s a bad thing, but you would think that the resources would be better spent improving their algorithm. Maybe they just got too much money to burn, or maybe its a really inexpensive form of creating press.

Personally, I wish the engines would return 25 results per page as the default. They know darn well most people don’t change the defaults and also that most don’t click past the first page. By defaulting to 25 rather than 10 (or one with instant search), the search engines will be better serving their users giving them much more relevant results at their fingertips.
