Being in the web marketing industry for as long as I have been gives me a unique vantage point. One thing that continually amazes me is both the changing nature of web marketing and its remarkable consistency at the same time. In the grand scheme of things, good SEO is still good SEO. What works today also worked in 1998. However, the same can’t be said in reverse, many tactics that SEOs used back in 1998 clearly no longer work today.
That’s the consistent part. So what’s changed?
Lots of stuff. Back in 1998 technology was vastly different. There was no such thing as social media, there were no content management systems, there was no Google Analytics, website architecture was hardly a concern, local results weren’t yet invented, and, well, nobody really expected that much.
Man, have times changed.
SEO used to be the job of one person. Not anymore. No one person can be an expert in website architecture, user experience, conversion analysis, analytic interpretation, content creation, sales messaging, link acquisition, keyword research, on-page optimization, social strategy, online interaction, pay-per-click marketing, etc. and etc.
Our company spends a total of 30 hours per week on education alone. But that’s a tall order for the small business who has a couple people managing the entire website! For most small businesses, online marketing can be quite overwhelming.
That’s why our team provides workshops for the local community. Our next workshop, A Survival Guide for the Overwhelmed Online Marketer, will be held on September 2, 2014 at 8:30am and 1pm. Here is the official description:
Social media marketing. Paid search. Web analytics. Content marketing. Search engine optimization. Online marketing is haaaaard! With so much to do, there’s no way you can do it all at once. Come find out how to “survive” online marketing. Learn what’s critical, what’s important and what isn’t. Stoney deGeyter will teach you the processes for moving through all areas of online marketing efficiently without becoming overwhelmed.
I’m still putting the finishing touches on the workshop, but some things I’ll be covering are what you can do to get quick victories, some optimization essentials, what areas of user experience require your attention, quick bits on local optimization, staying up with authority building, and some tools to help you along. And that’s just the the first 45 minutes!
This will be a true survival guide that will help every web marketer determine where to start and what’s the most important things to go after in the vast amount of online marketing options before you.
