Create Infinite Page Duplication: Use URL Session IDs

Look at you, you came back! We knew you just couldn't keep away for long. Why not make visiting us easy by subscribing to our RSS feed (or the audio RSS feed). Stick around and be sure to speak up and post a comment or two!

There is no better way to create an infinite amount of duplicate content on your site than to force session IDs onto each visitor. Typically, session IDs are used for tracking a single visitor’s navigation path through the site, including the adding or removing products from the shopping cart. They are great for tracking purposes, but really, really bad for search engines and inbound linking.

Session IDs

Ok, first of all, that’s a bad URL shown above, but aside from that, tacked on at the end there is the session ID. Both URLs pull the same page pulled open via a different browsing session. The bad stuff happens if the session IDs also get attached when the search engines come for a visit.

Small Business Marketing Unleashed: Day Two Wrap up

I am a day behind on getting this out for the day 2 of Small Business Marketing: Unleashed, but better late than never.

Day 2: Workshops

The day was kicked off with a presentation by one of the sponsors ideablob.com, and then we were released to go to workshops. (Sage Lewis, of SageRock.com tends to refer to each session / workshop as a class, which truly describes what the conference was like.) There were three time blocks with four workshops running in each block – Each block running an hour and a half. With that amount of time, we really were given in depth lessons on each topic. The hot topics were repeated, so you didn’t miss out on anything.

Small Business Marketing : Unleashed

Day 1: Sessions

WOW. What a great day. The day gave us four sessions / two tracks of indepth introductions to all aspects of Search Marketing for small businesses. Each speaker had a full hour to go into more depth on their subject than any conference you’ve ever attended.

Rather than have a keynote speaker, Unleashed opened with a general overview of what Online Search Marketing is all about. Jennifer Laycock introduced three incredible presenters,
Matt McGee of Marchex and Small Business SEM (who happens to hate Twitter I do not like green eggs and ham, I do not like them Sam I am.), Wendy Piersall of sparkplugging.com and Matt Bailey of SiteLogic.com.

Rand Fishkin of SEOmoz asked his readers to present their three best link building techniques. Instead of posting mine in the comments of his blog I thought I’d post mine here for the benefit of all my readers:

  1. Steal an idea from someone else
  2. Create a contest out of it
  3. Hoard the incoming links by not linking to your source of inspiration

Think Beyond The Link: How Exposure Building Trumps Link Building

Getting links is great, but as search marketers we should be looking far beyond that. We should not be so much as trying to get other websites to link to us (that’s certainly a welcome result) but we should instead be working on getting exposure, in whatever format that comes in.

Why? Because exposure is far better than a link.

If you had to choose between getting a link from a decent, industry related website, or a mention in a high-powered publication such as Time Magazine, which would you choose?

Sometimes Fixing a Site Means Breaking It First

Over the past ten years the mindset of SEO has evolved significantly. In the early years, website optimization was considered more of an IT expense handled by computer geeks. But over the years, businesses (and SEOs) began to change their frame of mind, realizing that search engine optimization was much closer to traditional marketing than they had thought.

After all, SEO is about getting exposure. Whether that is through on-page optimization, link building, social media, etc., the idea is to get as many targeted eyeballs on a site as possible. But that itself isn’t enough, because once the eyeballs are on the site the website has to make some money too. So now SEOs focus on usability (enhancing the visitor/shopper’s experience on the site) and conversions (getting sales, leads, subscribers, etc.). Exposure only brings traffic, usability allows the visitors to find the information they need, but ultimately it’s the conversions that matter most.
