Hey, you're new. We like you already! You obviously have great taste! If you like what you read here you'll probably want to subscribe to our RSS feed (or the audio RSS feed). Stick around and be sure to speak up and post a comment or two!
Many years ago I put my site through a re-design. I worked hard to make sure everything was done just right, including the images and navigation. But one thing I failed to consider was internal linking, separate from the navigational elements. It wasn’t until much later that I realized how much traffic I was losing because my internal linking was (or lack thereof) wasn’t benefiting my visitors.
In-site link implementation can make a considerable difference in how effective your optimization campaign is. Or isn’t. While your site’s primary and secondary navigation is extremely important, you shouldn’t make that the only way for visitors to get around your website. Click here to keep learning

When I first learned the title of the conference being developed by the crew over at Search Engine Guide I thought, “Awe, how cute. It fits the puppy theme.” Even as I was tapped to be a presenter I knew that Unleashed was going to be different. After all, I had an hour and 15 minute session all to myself. Apparently someone thought more highly of me than they ought! But I didn’t fully understand how different Unleashed would really be from the norm of search engine marketing conferences.
First of all kudos goes out to Jennifer Laycock, Rachel Phillips, Vickie Evans and Robert Clough (who’s sole job was to stand around and look pretty. He failed.) who were all key to making Unleashed happen. Their dedication to every last detail created one of the best industry conferences I’ve ever attended. Everything from the pre-event networking, through to the very last session went off seemingly without a hitch.

Road Trip!
Maybe some of you dread road trips, but I find them to be fun. I enjoy going to conferences and absorbing all the information. I enjoy meeting up with old friends from previous conferences … and I enjoy the humorous antics of one Stoney deGeyter. I thought I’d throw together a list of what I have to look forward to when we go to Small Business Marketing: Unleashed… This list is compiled from last month’s trip to Portland:
- Stoney remembers to take his Motion Sickness tablets and doesn’t get sick on the flight

- Stoney goes to his room and falls asleep as soon as we got to the hotel (maybe next trip I should bring some no-doz as a puppy-upper after the flight?)

- Playing pool w/ the Marchex team, including old friend Matt McGee
- Too cool to share the umbrella that someone remembered to bring (Portland Oregon. In March?), Stoney thought his SEMpdx t-shirt worked just as well (by the way Matt, Stoney says thanks for the shirt
)

- Forget watching the hotel movies, we watched the first hour of Moulin Rouge on the laptop. (Only the first hour because the rest didn’t record to the laptop. Hey, at least we had speakers for this trip. In San Jose 3 of us huddled around the laptop to hear the movie.)

- Taking the TriMet (gone to the dogs) to the airport, watching a movie on Stoney’s ipod. We didn’t see the coyote though, that would have way too cool.

- Stoney almost forgetting to take his Bonnie (remembered as the plane was taxiing away from the gate). I gave him the barf bag, just in case.

Like a sound site architecture and directory structure, product categorization can play a significant role in how both search engines and users are able to access your products. There are two important things to consider when determining how to categorize your products. 1) Is each product assigned to the most appropriate category or categories? and 2) is multiple categorization creating duplicate content? The first issue frustrates your users and the second the search engines.
Looking for examples of both of these I found exactly what I was looking for on The Home Depot website. Click here to keep learning

I’ve never claimed to be a programmer but working in SEO means that I’m involved in creating or editing hundreds of pages over the course of a year. Understanding how CSS works, and being able to implement basic to more advanced CSS strategies, has become essential over the past few years. Until now I’ve only had a rudimentary knowledge of CSS. The CSS Anthology has helped me grow my knowledge significantly on the topic.
