Q&A with Bob Loblaw: Domains, Redirects and 404’s. OMG.

Hey, you're new. We like you already! You obviously have great taste! If you like what you read here you'll probably want to subscribe to our RSS feed (or the audio RSS feed). Stick around and be sure to speak up and post a comment or two!

Bob LoblawI don’t know about you but I’m glad to be back to work after such a long weekend. I don’t do well over long weekends. Mostly because I’m extremely lazy and I end up sleeping about 12 hours every night. And that’s not including the morning, mid morning, noon, post-noon and early evening naps.

So I’m glad to be back to work. Back to a regular schedule of long work hours, few sleeping hours and a few minutes on the pool table a day. While they are not quite as awesome as my “real” family, if you have to be stuck with any group of people for nine to twelve hours a day, you could do worse than the Pole Position Marketing team. They’re good peeps.

Seinfeld on Marketing?

Seinfeld on MarketingA few weeks back Michelle found a fun little document by Bill Gammel that outlines 7 marketing lessons from the show Seinfeld. I can probably count the number of full Seinfeld episodes I’ve seen on one hand. (That’s all about to change as I was just gifted with the entire series on DVD). But that doesn’t mean that I don’t understand the importance that this show has had on our pop-culture.

In fact Seinfeld was probably the most important pop-culture show of all time, if one can attach the word importance to pop-culture. Not only did the show make fun of current pop culture idiosyncrasies, but it brought out into the open many of the hidden things that many of us didn’t realize that others did or thought right along with us. While Seinfeld made us laugh at these pop culture references it also created many more pop culture references that we still use today.

Windows Live – New Tools, Same Microsoft?

Microsoft has jumped head first into the world of online and desktop tools with the new Windows Live Suite aiming to simplify users’ experiences on the web. I hate to be the bearer of truth, but the tools look oddly familiar to those of our friend Google.

Live gives users free programs such as mail, photo sharing, blog hosting, social networking, and web-based docs. The only tool I found worth downloading was Windows Live Writer. Live Writer allows users to quickly publish content to a blog without using your blog’s typical online interface. The program works just like most desktop publishing programs such as MS Word. Writer also gives options such as inserting tabs, tables, video, formatting, etc, making it quite easy to upload content to our WordPress-based blog. Live Writer is a great tool for those that may not be very web savvy. I know quite a bit HTML, but for those who don’t, this tool could prove to be quite useful with eye-appealing and easy to use interface.

There you have it. I’ve endorsed a Microsoft product and I’m sane.

Podcast Feature Update

I have just added a couple of new features in relation to the audio downloads.

1) For site visitors I have added an embedded player so you don’t have to click on the MP3 icon forcing another browser window/tab to open. This is a very nice and handy Wordpress plugin.

2) I have added an RSS feed for the audio files, so if that’s the only thing you want, you can subscribe to the feed that provides a quick summary of the podcast and links to the file for a listen. I have yet to find a way to update my podcast RSS feed automatically so if anybody knows of a solution please share.

3) I’ve been fiddling around with icons and finding the right balance for all this. I’m keeping the big MP3 icon for now which shows up in the standard RSS feed (the audio player doesn’t). Essentially, you can get the audio regardless of how you subscribe or view the page. I’m open to any ideas on how to make this better. I’m new to the whole podcasting thing so any suggestions are welcome. Especially when it comes to making the feeds better.

Top PPC Tip Lists – Everything You Need to Know

Maybe not quite a Top 10 Top 10 Reasons your PPC ads suck … but maybe.

Last week I was organizing my binder of helpful blog posts (read: old fashioned method of having something on hand to re-read later. ie hard copy paper trail version of del.icio.us) and I found at least 8 separate documents that in one way or another are lists of “Top ten mistakes made in PPC” “Top mistakes to avoid” “The reason your PPC ads suck” …. or some sort of variation on this theme.

And then on Friday I was catching up on reading Sphinn’s Hot topics and came across Top 10 Reasons Why ‘Top 10′ Lists are so Popular. This of course addresses exactly what I had noticed a long time ago, and yet was put obviously clear — in front of my face — as I organized my binder.

From No to Know – How to Get Started in SEO/Marketing Copywriting

This post marks my first of many on the E-Marketing Performance blog. Although I have many years experience as a writer, I have little to no experience in marketing writing let alone SEO writing.

SEO Title Tags for WordPress

Wordpress SEO Title Tag Plugin
In the web development world, the popularity of WordPress as an opensource blog manager / CMS has been exponential. As an SEO, I see this as a great opportunity to fine tune your WordPress blog to use proper title tags. As most of us know, search engines give much of their ranking power to your title tags. In addition, they can serve as a strong branding opportunity for your blog / business.

There are many tools available to aid your WordPress SEO efforts. One of the more popular tools is SEO Title Tag 2.0. This plug in allows users to add unique title tags to each page / post. For example, you can specify your homepage to have your business name and some keywords, and allow your posts to not carry the business name at all. In addition, users can manipulate the plug in to reverse the order of your title.
