Gotcha! Don’t you love those homonyms and homophones. They’re great when you’re telling jokes, but when you’re writing copy, you want to make sure to choose your words wisely.

The Same, But Different
Here are the top five words that can easily be misconstrued:
- Bustier: as in the lingerie or …well you know.
- Invalid: an invalid code or a sick person. They’re along the same lines, but a tad bit different.
- Breech/Breach: totally different!
- Gross: either really gross or really small, like Craig’s gross income. (hee, hee)
- Sheer/Shear: they both refer to nakedness, but the means are slightly different.
Know the Rules Before You Break Them
Mixing up words that sound the same can be the biggest mistake a copywriter makes, unless of course they do it on purpose. You can have a great ad campaign based on a humorous homonym or homophone. As wee all know humor sells, or at least increases readership. Vial and vile have very different meanings. No one wants to buy a vial of vile perfume.
