I don't own any PJ's. Nylon hiking shorts and a tee shirt are the usual attire.

many of them want you full time or would love to have you relocate,

That's the absolute truth, especially in my case! I don't mind using sub contractors remotely but I would so much prefer to have someone in-house. But I think there is so much more to be gained for all involved to be in-house. Of course as someone who is their own boss, I also fully understand the need and desire to be such.

Actually I try to concentrate most of my work with larger marketing agencies, SEO companies that need a trustworthy SEO. This free me up to do the actual SEO work and not have to manage many of the billing issues, customer service, etc. Sometimes I work under the umbrella of the company, sometimes the clients don't even know I exist.

I do have my own clients and am very happy to continue with them and sign more, but as you have mentioned above when your one guy you do reach a threshold. This is why I am leaning towards partnering with larger companies.

The bad part of this is many of them want you full time or would love to have you relocate, but I am very happy to be in my own boss for a long time to come.

Lots of SEOs make money in your PJ, but I think many of them outsource a LOT of what they do. One guy (or gal) can't be an expert in writing great content AND spending enough time building links AND do the ongoing tweaking AND coding AND all the reporting AND handle all client concerns at the same time. Well, I guess they could but they couldn't have more than a small handful of clients and charge some considerably hefty hourly fees.

Me, I wear my boxers to work, but since I'm behind the desk nobody else notices!

Stoney .... after speaking to about 27 SEO companies and 4 "consultants" I learned to spot B.S.

One guy will tell you one thing, another will say it absolutely differently or opposite. I simply decided to add it to my other Marketing duties here. (until it gets to be too much, then we'll outsource).

I found about 3-4 SEOs who are truly great. BUT ... they own themselves. They make money in their PJs.
