The Basics of Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

When was the last time you googled your website only to find that your site appears on the bottom of page 4 in a Google search? Sales have been a little slow and lagging far behind projections but isn’t that because the economy is not performing well? We’re planning a redesign of the website and that should bring in some new customer, right? If you spend the time and money to put your business online shouldn’t you take that extra step smart online business owners swear by and get your site optimized for top ranking?

If you want your site to be listed near the top of page one of a search, you need to be aware of the principles and factors involved in Search Engine Optimization (SEO). A user will search for a site or product using a word or a phrase known as a keyword. How and where that keyword is used on your website has a direct affect on the search and is the essence of SEO. SEO is not a mystery it is a highly technical, scientifically based disciple whose results can be proven.

The best search engines are designed to deliver keyword specific results to the user. They employ spiders or web crawlers that search for keywords in the title and description of your site. These are called meta tags and should also be reflected in your page content.

You keywords are based on your goods or services. But they must also mirror the specific words, acronyms and phrases that your customers use to search for the products you sell.

Since customers frequently specify a location in their searches, you will want to reflect a location in your keywords also. For example, a web marketing firm based in Reno Nevada would include their location in the phrase Reno SEO as well as the words “search engine optimization”. By including the specific location for the SEO search, competition for page position is minimized because far fewer SEO sites occur that are location specific.

The more times a search engine produces matches between the user’s keywords and those used in your website, the higher your rankings will go. For company’s doing business on the Internet, there’s nothing more exciting than coming up at the top of page 1 on an internet search!
