How You Can Survive the Online Marketing Onslaught

An overwhelmed marketing expert

Being in the web marketing industry for as long as I have been gives me a unique vantage point. One thing that continually amazes me is both the changing nature of web marketing and its remarkable consistency at the same time. In the grand scheme of things, good SEO is still good SEO. What works today also worked in 1998. However, the same can’t be said in reverse, many tactics that SEOs used back in 1998 clearly no longer work today.

That’s the consistent part. So what’s changed?

Lots of stuff. Back in 1998 technology was vastly different. There was no such thing as social media, there were no content management systems, there was no Google Analytics, website architecture was hardly a concern, local results weren’t yet invented, and, well, nobody really expected that much.

Man, have times changed.

SEO used to be the job of one person. Not anymore. No one person can be an expert in website architecture, user experience, conversion analysis, analytic interpretation, content creation, sales messaging, link acquisition, keyword research, on-page optimization, social strategy, online interaction, pay-per-click marketing, etc. and etc.

Our company spends a total of 30 hours per week on education alone. But that’s a tall order for the small business who has a couple people managing the entire website! For most small businesses, online marketing can be quite overwhelming.

    Completely agree with the need for education, it’s not easy knowing what to do, where to start and how to go about it. It would be great if you could also record these sessions and make them available in a video to those who are not located in the same city or cannot access the event for some reason.
