Even Your About Us Page Shouldn’t Be About You

Even your about us page should be more about your visitor than you.

I love a good About Us page. This page provides an opportunity to tell your visitors a bit about you and your company. A little bragging is always fun!

A good About Us page should tell your visitors everything they need to know about you that helps them be comfortable engaging in business with you. But that’s not all. While your About Us page content technically is all about you, it still shouldn’t be all about you.

[inlinetweet prefix=”” tweeter=”” suffix=””]A good About Us page isn’t really about you at all, it’s about your visitor. [/inlinetweet]You’re only telling them information about your company that helps them. In a way, your About Us page needs to be self-focused without being selfish.

Your visitors are there for a reason. They are looking for something. Sure they want to learn a bit about you, but that’s not always the “help” they need. So give them a little nudge by helping them move in the right direction.

A great way to do that is to provide links to other content that may be useful to them. Here are some ideas:

  • Contact Us Page
  • Registration info
  • Investor Relations
  • Company News
  • Job Opportunities
  • Newsletters

Each of these links leads to additional, yet a narrower, subset of information about your company. It allows the visitor to choose which option best meets their needs for what they want as they continue to learn and engage with your company.

So instead of creating an About Us page that’s exclusively focused on you, figure out how you can focus that page on getting the visitor to the best information that meets their needs.
