Where are TV commercials going these days? Is it just me, or does it seem like a very prominent TV advertising strategy these days almost always seems to involve what are portrayed as dumb, chubby, white males. I am not trying to make a race or gender issue out of this by any means, but think about it, it’s the truth isn’t it? How many commercials do you see where women are portrayed to look like complete idiots (yes, there’s a few, but not nearly as many)? The only equal opportunity offender I’ve noticed are the SouthWest Airline commercials; which seem to more equally portray people of all races and genders as morons.
If someone were to get completely educated on American society from our TV commercials alone, they would think of all American males as dumb and shallow with basically nothing more on the brain than beer, sports, girls, and how to be completely ignorant. Now don’t get me wrong, I think beer, sports, girls, and ignorance are great, maybe even a good advertising strategy at one point, but we don’t need to be beaten over the head nonstop with the same male stereotypes! Men are much more dynamic than that (at least I think so). Advertisers need to think of some new ideas with a different theme, because I think “creative burnout” is a serious epidemic for the most-part within the current world of TV advertising.
