Can You Survive On Social Media Alone?

Social Media Tree

More and more, it seems as if we are living in a social media world. More people are looking at investing in building up their social presence, and much of it comes at the expense of other viable online marketing strategies. The question many businesses are asking is, “Can I survive on social media alone?”

The answer to that question is, “yes.” Yes, you can build a successful business doing nothing else other than social media marketing. In fact, in a recent post I made the case that SEO cannot thrive without social media.

But I think the opposite is true as well. If you’re asking if you can survive with social only, the answer is yes. If you’re asking if you can thrive on social only, I would say no to that.

The reality is really based on how you define “thrive”. Many businesses can certainly thrive without either SEO or social media. When I use that term, I’m suggesting something a bit different.

If getting 100 sales is thriving, and you can do that with social media alone, congratulations. But for me, that’s not thriving. For me, thriving is getting the 100 sales from social media and the other 100 sales from SEO, and the other 100 sales with the synergy between the two. That’s thriving!

Social media is actually a great way to get noticed, build authority, and earn business. Some businesses get rich on social media alone. But for most of us, a combo of SEO and social is what really does the job. [Tweet This]
